Tequila!

It’s National Drive-Thru Day today. I shan’t be celebrating because a) ‘thru’ is not how you spell ‘through’ b) it all smacks of MuckDonalds (as my brother wisely calls it) and c) the idea of driving through somewhere to obtain food is abhorrent to me ref: mention of my becoming a fussy eater from yesterday’s post, m’lud.

Onwards. It is also Thermal Engineer Day and I started reading about the heady, exciting life of the thermal engineer in order to report something witty and scintillating, and almost died from boredom.

Onwards again. National Amelia Earhart Day! That’s more like it! The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, she ‘disappeared’ on 2nd July 1937, aged 39, whilst crossing the Pacific. This is Amelia...
Now, I’ve said ‘disappeared’ because, to me, she looks like the kind of feisty gal who would engineer her own vanishing act because she’d had enough of people in general, and wanted to go adventuring out of the limelight. Or just hang up her goggles and helmet and set up a goat sanctuary. And people kept saying, ‘You can’t do THAT, Amelia. You are an icon, a role model, a mover and shaker, a go-er and getter. You OWE it to your public, especially women, to do something else of great national importance.’

And she thought, ‘Stuff that.’ And disappeared. I would.

Anyway, wherever she went, let’s raise a shot of tequila to her, because it is also National Tequila Day. I shan’t join you, because I don’t imbibe of the alcohol. Mine’s a lime and soda, thanks. And there’s the whole worm thing, too.

Apparently, though, the worm is more associated with tequila’s cousin, mezcal. Oh yes, indeed. Tequila is made from blue agave, mezcal from maguey. And the ‘worm’ is the gusano de magney caterpillar which lives on the maguey plant! Who knew?! And the caterpillar, provided it doesn’t drown to death in a spirit strong enough to remove the enamel from your teeth, turns into the Mariposa butterfly...

Beautiful, yes?

Finally, because of the cousin connection between tequila and mezcal, and I am enjoying my natural flow of segues today, it is also National Cousins Day. I have a lot of cousins, a few of whom I am in contact with, most of whom I’m not. But in the spirit of the day here is a shout out to them all. Hello (in no particular order) to Ruth, John, Peter, Simon, Hazel, Ben, Andrew, Debbie, Richard, Georgina, Emily, Stephanie, Victor, Claire, Emma, Jenny and Matthew and my two cousins in spirit, Paul and Aaron who lived with, and died from, cystic fibrosis.

And because I don’t want to end on a somber note, here is Bambino Bobble Wilson pretending not to be in the middle of a surreptitious nibble on my vase of Sweet Williams.
