Distinctive pants, social media post cited as key evidence in Passaic drive-by murder trial - NorthJersey.com

CLOSE

Dozens gathered on Federal Street Tuesday afternoon to mourn the loss of Hansel Castillo, 23, who was shot and killed Monday night in front of his best friend's house.

Prosecutors haven't provided a motive or murder weapon yet in the case of a 2017 drive-by shooting in Passaic that killed Hansel Castillo.

Instead, as testimony continued on Tuesday, they cited a Facebook page and a distinctive pair of pants as two key piece of evidence against defendant Chrstian Reynoso.

The city police detective who led the investigation, Ray Rodriguez, took the witness stand and testified that investigators received an anonymous tip days after the May 15, 2017 shooting on Federal Street that led them to Reynoso's Facebook page.

Although the page did not contain any information that directly implicated Reynoso in the shooting, it was enough to make him "a person of interest," Rodriguez said during the trial in state Superior Court in Paterson. While the detective didn't specify what that incriminating information was, but it was was enough for police to obtain a search warrant of the Howe Avenue address in Passaic where Reynoso lived.

Reynoso, 20, and a co-defendant, Nicholas Vargas, 27,of Lodi, are charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons possession for the alleged attack, which also wounded Castillo's friend, Brian Cabrerra. Both defendants could face life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.

Cops also collected surveillance video from locations on Howe Avenue during the period just before the shooting, which was played for the jury on Tuesday.

Senior Assistant Prosecutor Nubar Kasaryan says the footage shows Reynoso wearing a distinctive pair of pants with unusual "splotches." The prosecution contends that a man is seen wearing pants with the same funky design in video taken from near the shooting scene on Federal Street. Castillo died at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson that night; Cabrerra was driven to St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic and survived with a wound to the shoulder.

So far, the prosecution has based its case primarily on surveillance video.

Although police recovered three spent .22 shell casings and one live bullet from the scene, the weapon was never recovered. The state is not expected to present any eyewitnesses.

Rodriguez testified that he showed the Howe Avenue video footage to a police officer who worked at Passaic High School, where Reynoso was a student. The cops then questioned the teenager, but he denied any involvement.

Reynoso's attorney, Ronald Hunt, sought to downplay the footage during cross-examination. "You didn't see Christian Reynoso commit any crimes on the video, did you?" he asked. "No," Rodriguez replied.

Rodriguez said Reynoso, who was 17 years old at the time, was a somewhat familiar face to Passaic police — but not because of any prior trouble with the law.

"He had been a member of the Junior Police Academy," said Rodriguez, alluding to the city's summer program for youth. The program, the detective explained, teaches kids the fundamentals of police work and tries to steer them toward the right side of the law.

Rodriguez is expected to return to the witness stand on Wednesday when the trial resumes before Judge Justine Niccollai.

As someone who has only recently come back around to the idea of skinny jeans, you can imagine how this latest curveball has rocked my world.
